I have been teaching and leading at Francis W. Parker School for 17 years, after finishing a PhD in Comparative Literature at U.C. Berkeley and a Postdoc at Northwestern. Now I teach education classes at Northwestern University and lead the Teachers’ Inquiry Project. In my blog I talk about democratic education as a practice of respect for others and oneself. I also wrote a book about democratic education, published by Teachers’ College Press, called Teaching and Learning on the Verge: Democratic Education in Action. My professional practice and my writing bring together anti-oppression education, social-emotional learning, and comparative civic education. My blog is a learning space for me, and I hope, for my readers.
